In this age of digital transformation, enterprises are more dependent than ever on information and technology (I&T) assets to drive innovation, growth and sustainability. As a result, enterprise governance of information and technology (EGIT) has taken on more importance, guiding strategic decisions from boards of directors, through executive leadership, to business and IT managers. For more than twenty years, the globally recognized COBIT governance framework for I&T has guided enterprises in creating more value from these important assets.
COBIT 2019 is the latest iteration of the COBIT framework, and it contains revised and new information as well as enhanced guidance for designing and implementing a right-sized governance program for your enterprise. COBIT 2019 Implementation Guide: Implementing and Optimizing an Information and Technology Governance Solution picks up where the COBIT 2019 Design Guide ended—you have designed a customized governance system for your enterprise, now how do you effectively implement it?
First, start by recognizing that I&T governance program implementation must focus on realizing benefits, not just checking the boxes on a project schedule. With full organizational buy-in on what value is being achieved through implementation, the governance program is more likely to move from the project phase to the governance as usual phase—the sign of a successful implementation.
In addition, consider your starting point. Most enterprises have some governance structures in place— build on already successful efforts instead of trying to invent an all-new approach. Furthermore, any previous improvements created by applying COBIT 5 or other standards/practices need not be reworked—use COBIT 2019 to make enhancements as part of the enterprise’s continual improvement efforts.
This publication is not intended to be a prescriptive approach or the complete solution, but rather a guide to avoid pitfalls, leverage the latest good practices, and assist in the creation of successful governance and management outcomes over time. To an important extent, it works in conjunction with the COBIT 2019 Design Guide, which helps every enterprise to identify and apply its own specific plan or road map.
