Members of ISACA who are executives and senior managers in the IT field have developed an exciting program to reach students with the message of rewarding careers in the IS audit and control profession. One full-time faculty member per functional discipline, such as MIS or accounting, at universities offering one or more courses in IT governance, audit accounting information systems or security is invited to become an Academic Advocate to ISACA. The main areas of the program are:

  • ISACA complimentary membership for the Academic Advocate. Membership in ISACA provides additional benefits including reduced conference registration fees and an ISACA Bookstore discount.
  • Model Curriculum for IS audit provides support for curriculum development and evolution and delves into research on current university offerings in the field.

IT Governance Using COBIT and Val IT is available to all professors who pledge to share their own COBIT teaching materials. More Information.

Information About ISACA

With more than 75,000 members in more than 175 chapters worldwide, ISACA is the leading association of professionals in information systems (IS) audit control and security, and a recognized global leader in IT governance, control and assurance. ISACA sponsors international conferences and administers the globally respected CISA designation held by more than 65,000 professionals worldwide, the CISM designation and the new Certified in the Governance of Enterprise IT (CGEIT) designation. ISACA is dedicated to serving the needs of its members, who are internal and external auditors, CEOs, CFOs, CIOs, educators, information security and control professionals, students and IT consultants.

The ISACA Model Curriculum was developed for use in universities and colleges by a task force of 11 academics and practicing professionals from 11 countries on 5 continents. It is based on the skills needed by businesses to ensure their information systems are adequately governed, controlled and audited. The IS auditing curriculum is interdisciplinary, a format encouraged by most international accrediting bodies. The curriculum outlines the academic training needed to prepare candidates for entry-level positions in IS auditing. It also provides support for curriculum development and evolution and delves into research on current university offerings in the field.

The CISA examination content areas provide the framework used to provide a structure to organize the issues in the model curriculum. COBIT processes are integrated into the CISA content areas. The seven major content areas in the model curriculum are:

  • Audit Process
  • Management Planning and Organization of IS
  • Technical Infrastructure and Operational Practices
  • Protection of Information Assets
  • Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity
  • Business Application System Development, Acquisition, Implementation and Maintenance
  • Business Process Evaluation and Risk Management

Schools that have adopted the curriculum are eligible to be listed on our web site. This helps students interested in the IS audit profession find schools which offer the programs they need. It also helps colleges and universities market their programs to organizations looking to recruit interested and qualified students.

Control Objectives for Information and related Technology, (COBIT) is an international IT governance and control framework and that can be downloaded on a complimentary basis from the IT Governance Institute, in affiliation with ISACA. The result of years of research and cooperation among global IT and business experts, COBIT provides an authoritative, international set of generally accepted IT practices for business managers and auditors. COBIT helps organizations develop an internal IT control system that supports business processes. It describes a set of 34 IT processes grouped into four domains: plan and organize, acquire and implement, deliver and support, and monitor and evaluate. This material has been used successfully as teaching material in universities and colleges throughout the world and printed material is offered at a volume discount to academia. A copy of COBIT 4.1 will be awarded to those who agree to represent their university as the ISACA Academic Advocate.
