IT Governance Using COBIT® and Val IT

IT Governance Using COBIT and Val IT is a set of educational materials that professors and teachers can use to explain and present COBIT in their curricula and courses of information systems management, information security management, information systems auditing and/or accounting information systems. This educational package was constructed using the advice and counsel of a global group of academics and practitioners. The purpose was to create a more focused approach for teaching and presenting COBIT in the classroom. 

IT Governance Using COBIT and Val IT is available to all professors who pledge to share their own COBIT teaching materials.

Chapter 1, Purpose of This Document states the objective in creating this document was to develop a learning resource that can be used effectively by students with little or no business experience. As a result, the ITGI materials reproduced herein have been abridged by removing material that addresses practical and operational issues that are of concern to business people and information technology (IT) professionals, but may be difficult for students to appreciate and comprehend.

Chapter 2, Governing IT Resources, describes IT governance practices and how an organization can create business value through IT investments. Material for chapter 2 was assembled from the Board Briefing on IT Governance, 2nd Edition and Enterprise Value: Governance of IT Investments—The Val IT Framework.

Chapter 3, Managing IT Risks, presents a framework of control objectives designed to help an organization manage risks that threaten information and related technology. Material for chapter 3 was assembled from COBIT 4.1.

Chapter 4, Providing IT Assurance, describes the processes that assurance professionals use to evaluate and report on the effectiveness of IT controls. Material for chapter 4 was assembled from the IT Assurance Guide Using COBIT.

Chapter 5, Auditing IT Controls Over Financial Reporting, outlines the process for auditing IT controls over financial reporting. Material for chapter 5 was assembled from IT Control Objectives for Sarbanes-Oxley, 2nd Edition.

The Appendix contains the COBIT components for five processes:  DS2 (expanded as an example), PO9, AI2, DS5 and ME2.

PowerPoint Presentation - Download Sample (PPT, 539K)

This PowerPoint Presentation of 35 slides introduces COBIT as a solution to the need for a control and governance framework, explains all the COBIT elements, and provides a brief walkthrough of each of the components of COBIT, i.e., control objectives, management guidelines, control practices and assurance steps. This presentation can be used as a stand-alone teaching aid for those professors just getting started with COBIT. As well, it can serve to supplement those materials that they may have created on their own.

Case Study - Download Sample (PDF, 169K)

This extensive Case Study can be used in the classroom, to enable students to experience the use of COBIT in a practical situation. This case is comprehensive and more aimed at the graduate level where the knowledge and interest is at a deeper level. The Case Study material provides a detailed description of a case company, and questions/assignments for the students. Teaching notes, inlcuding solution notes, are available for to professors/teachers..

Caselets - Download Sample (PDF, 191K)

Six mini-cases that are applicable for smaller classroom COBIT exercises at graduate or undergraduate level. These caselets could also be used by academics at professional conferences. Each caselet provides a case description, questions/assignments for students. Teaching notes, including solution notes, are available to professors/teachers.
