Strategic planning is an important component of strategic business management. It results in long-term planning for and future direction of an enterprise at a strategic level. If a strategic planning exercise is done for the first time, it results in setting the vision, mission and values for the enterprise. Strategic planning cycles can vary from three to five years and are industry-dependent. For a set vision and mission, the goals are normally reviewed and revised from one cycle to another. Every strategy cycle results in new or updated goals to achieve the vision of the enterprise. The strategy implementation phase deals with the delivery of the set strategic goals. The following is a step-by-step approach to the strategic planning activity using COBIT® 5 guidelines.

RE: COBIT Focus - Strategic Planning Using COBIT 5

Dear Shahid Ali, Thank you for a excellent article. I'm sure the community will benefit with 'Flowchart Showing Steps of Strategic Planning Using COBIT 5'. That was really helpful. In the article, there is a mention of six enablers. Aren't they seven? Kindly provide us more information on following. . Develop Enabler Life Cycle Plan . Set guidelines for selection of Good Practices for each Enabler . Ensure Governance Framework Setting and Maintenance (EDM01) . Manage the IT Management Framework (APO01) . Perform Phases 1 to 4 of Programme Management and Change Enablement Thank you and good day ahead.

RE: COBIT Focus - Strategic Planning Using COBIT 5

Dear Uppala Anand, Thanks for your sharing your thoughts on the article and appreciating its value. More information on Enabler Lifecycle Plan and Enabler Good Practices can be found in COBIT 5 Enabler guides. Some high level guidelines on how to use them with reference to Strategic Planning are discussed in the article in reference to Figure 7. More details on EDM01 and APO01 are available in COBIT 5 Enabling Processes guide. The details for Implementation Lifecycle phases are available in COBIT 5 Implementation guide. These references are summarized in Figure 1 (table). One purpose of the article is to factor out the parts in COBIT 5 pertaining to Strategic Planning and then direct the readers to specific COBIT 5 Product family for more details. Regarding the number of enablers, the article text discusses correctly the seven enablers (see discussion on Figure 7), but for some reason the flowchart (Figure 6) has six! Thanks for pointing it out. I am looking forward to discussing the article more with you and other fellow members. – Shahid Ali.
