Taking the first step towards implementing COBIT® 5 in an organisation can be daunting, especially for smaller businesses with few resources. To be fair, it is a large body of work and could well be the first formalised framework with which the organisation engages. Many organisations may view it as an unnecessary exercise, under the belief that a small IT department will not see significant benefits, and that the implementation itself will be costly and time consuming. However, this is an unfair assessment of a powerful tool.

RE: COBIT Focus - COBIT 5 Advantages for Small Enterprises

We are using COBIT 5 to implement IT governance and build process capability at organizations with just 2 IT staff to over 200 IT staff. COBIT is useful to organizations of any size. A key requirement of the COBIT framework is to apply it in the proper context.

RE: COBIT Focus - COBIT 5 Advantages for Small Enterprises

Obviously, I've left a great deal unsaid in this article, but the fundamental message is that COBIT can (and arguably should) be applied to any organisation that wants to leverage value from the IT function.

An additional point that I'd like to make is that COBIT's popularity and wide adoption means that other organisations you deal with will often have some understanding and appreciation of the framework. If you're a small business starting out, being able to talk in these terms to potential partners, clients and suppliers, you're in a much stronger position - even before you realise any of the direct gains from application of COBIT, you're presenting yourself as a mature organisation.

RE: COBIT Focus - COBIT 5 Advantages for Small Enterprises

In my experience of training/implementing COBIT, I have seen multiple approaches to using COBIT in varied enterprises: large, medium or small. In small enterprises, the implementation is driven mostly by an employee/auditor of the organisation who sees value in using COBIT. In such cases, the bottom up approach is followed where COBIT is used for specific process(es) or parts of process where COBIT can bring value addition. Using contents of COBIT enabling process guide as a benchmark provides after customisation provides excellent guidelines for improving processes. Although, best value of COBIT implementation is top down approach, the simple bottom up approach can also aid in getting started in using COBIT and demonstrate value.

Hi Rafeq,

Your last sentence made a lot of sense, and I intend to use that approach in similar situations. Thanks a lot for your insight & suggestions.
