There are a number of key benefits to be gained from effective governance of enterprise IT (GEIT). Among those benefits are IT-business alignment, the realization of the benefits of IT investments, reduced costs, reduced IT-related business risk, and the ability to meet regulatory and compliance requirements. Many organizations across different industries, including retail, banking, oil and gas, telecommunications and government sectors, are implementing or improving GEIT using the COBIT® 5 framework.

Implementing an effective GEIT framework requires management commitment, a focused approach and resources. The 5 most common mistakes people make during a GEIT implementation are:

Hi, what about Hospital information systems? They  are critical ones and i think we should consider a different approach for implementation of cobit, any suggestions?

RE: COBIT Focus - 5 Common Mistakes in Adopting COBIT 5

Hi Alireza,

Thanks for your comment and query.

Firstly we are not implementing COBIT, we are using COBIT to implement Governance of Enterprise IT (GEIT).

When it comes to industry specific, each industry may have your own compliance, regulatory requirements. Also the complexity of the business functions.

The approach you need to consider is
1. What is the objective , what problem we need to solve
2. Identify the domain / processes which meet the requirements
3. Perform an assessment to know where do you stand on these selected processes
4. Perform a risk analysis on the GAPs
5. Prioretize your improvement journey with most critical processes
6. Continue the journey

Most important aspect during this journey is
- Senior management commitment
- People change management ( accepting new processes and following the processes)
- Regular review of the process results

As I mentioned, never try to implement all 37 process from COBIT. You may end up following all processes over a period. But to start with identify the critical ones and most beneficial one.

Hope it helps and let me know if you need any further clarification

Regards,

Sreechith

RE: COBIT Focus - 5 Common Mistakes in Adopting COBIT 5

Tx for sharing this, Sreechith! I like your initiative on GEIT implementation "using" the COBIT framework. Beyond that, what I'd like to hear from you are the 5 most critical steps in kick-starting a similar process (besides obtaining management commitment) in an environment where GEIT is only prevalent with a basic IT Governance structure.

Cheers!
