In the summer of 2014, the chief information officer (CIO) of a shared service center (SSC) owned by 3 different, culturally diverse types of companies asked the author to perform an assessment based on COBIT® 5. The most pressing question the CIO needed to answer for his organization’s board of directors (BoD) was, “Are we in control of IT?” One year later, the consultant’s goal is to evaluate whether the CIO and the managers of the SSC are making progress in answering the board’s question with, “Yes, we are in control of IT because of ….” This article describes the work that had to be done (using combined knowledge of ISO/IEC 38500, COBIT® 4.1 and COBIT 5) to make COBIT 5 more applicable and support the one-year-later assessment at the SSC.

RE: COBIT Focus - Does a COBIT 5 Self-assessment Help the Business to Get Control of a Shared Service Center?

Is the Cobit framework to complex? The thing is that the amount of information delivered by Isaca is hugh. You have to know where to look and make it accessible. What is your overall opinion, does Cobit 5 create value?

And therein lies the beauty of COBIT 5 - it is both adaptable and flexible.  Yes, "you have to know where to look" - but then this is no ordinary TV manual which one can simply give to one's kids to help setup the latest UHD - 60 inch TV.

One final thought - once you have zeroed in on the elements relevant to your organisation, it doesn't stop there - there is always opportunity for continuous assessment and then, continuous improvement through incorporating other relevant elements which were not previously targeted.

Greeting Mr. Schorning,

Well written article. I particularly liked the realization that the BoD has to be accountable for the Governance for 2016. Frankly speaking, I guess this was an important gap that was discovered in the early stages and addressed. Without the BoD, the IT Governance is truly incomplete and the business would be still disconnected with IT.

Best of luck for your adventure.
