IT Strategic Plan vs Corporate Plan

Hello fellow IT governance Professionals,
It is common practice that an organisation's Corporate strategic plan is approved by the board. It then follows that other sections such as IT will formulate their IT strategic plan that is aligned to the corporate plan.
My question is this then, should the IT strategic plan be then submitted to the board for approval or can management approve it themselves? Any guidance or best practices that one can refer to on this issue?

Thanks,

BMC

RE: IT Strategic Plan vs Corporate Plan

Hi,

IT Strategy plan should be in line with the corporate strategic plan. It should be approved by the board after reviewing the alignment of corporate and IT strategy plan.

RE: IT Strategic Plan vs Corporate Plan

I don't know if there is a "best practice" for approval of the IT strategic plan. I've been in several organizations where the IT strategic plan was treated the same as any other business unit's strategic plan. Each business unit (including IT) should have a plan that reflects that unit's functions and its support of the corporate plan. Those plans are typically reviewed by senior management and approved by the business unit's head (usually at the VP-level).

RE: IT Strategic Plan vs Corporate Plan

Board Should only approve corporate strategy which is handled to management... All business units strategy should align with strategy corporate plan. To my understanding this'd plans are geared toward implementing corporate plan and hence they do not next another approval from board. Else board will be doing management responsibilities

Hello Bevan,

In my opinion, your answer lies in the COBIT 5 - Enabling Processes Guide, which  gives you the detailed cascading of roles and responsibilities, goals, enablers right from the "corporate" level of strategy to the end task to be done.

Definitely to get acceptance and authority IT Strategic Plan should be approved at the highest corporate level.

RE: IT Strategic Plan vs Corporate Plan

In a perfect world, both executive management and corporate governance would report to the board. IT governance would report to corporate governance. IT Governance would work with IT Management to align their plan to the corporate goals while corporate governance worked with the rest of the departments. Corporate governance would work with executive management to make sure all the plans were coordinated with each other. The final plans may be approved by corporate governance or they may go back to the board for final approval. It depends on how much control the board exerts over the day-to-day operations.
