Data Governance

With so much interest in Cyber Security, organizations are focused on perimeter security such as strong firewalls and educating staff about phishing emails. But I continue to read and hear about internal threats. There is also a lot of interest in Big Data. Organizations are all collecting and processing more and more data. Do you think organizations are doing enough about data governance and data security?

RE: Data Governance

The interest in Big Data is not new. The manage of data is evolving at a less speed than technology itself. I agree that organizations are all collecting and processing more and more data everyday but it is really useful data. Let take an example: a non It professional that used to have many documents, pictures, music and stuff in his/her personal or office computer decided to uploaded to a an internet storage service provider, like G-Drive, Amazon, Azure Storage or OneDrive. There is data that is no useful to him/her or anybody, probably do not know what is it but transferred to the Web anyway. Is this really necessary? What happens when an organization without data governance do the same, what about the data security risk that this organization is accepting because have no CEIT structure or any IT framework I assure this is not satisfying stakeholders' needs. Do we as It professional do something about this individual? Not really, but at an organization level we have the responsibility to manage data in a effective and efficient way because the information that we decided to upload or the applications that we decided to develop and use on the Internet will definitively have a financial impact in the organizations. This calls for establishing a data governance and data security framework that it's required to address the stakeholders' needs.
