Is gamification a solution for the information security awareness?

Hype or not, gamification becomes a professional solution which expands out of the entertainment and into other business domains. For those who want to know what gamification is : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gamification My question to you: is gamification one of the newest solutions for promoting information security awareness with the different audiences in your organisation? If no, why not? If yes, which audiences and who needs to drive/control this?

RE: Is gamification a solution for the information security awareness?

We do use a soft form of gamification as part of our CDC Course for Security Awareness Training.  Gamification is a part of all CDC Courses that are created inhouse as the participant is engaged and cannot multi-task.  The CDC Courses are Auditory, Written and Interactive.  It is just a part of our every day training of our employees.

Thanks Sandy.  This seems very advanced and a leading practice.  How do you measure & improve this gamification approach?

RE: Is gamification a solution for the information security awareness?

Hi Marc,

We built crossword puzzles into the awareness as well as fill-in questions and multiple choice.  The results are calculated and then we know the level of understanding our employees have regarding our Acceptable Use.  We can pull the reports and then measure how we need to tweak our Awareness Program.

Google knows all :)

Imagine if users could be as excited about your IT security/awareness program as they are about things like (ugh) Farmville?  Games are appealing to employees of all ages and gamification is a clever way of making a potentially ho-hum topic interesting.  People are competitive by nature and having things like leader boards, achievement lists (ala Steam!), challenges, etc as part of your ongoing initiative, you can make changes to the corporate culture without your users even realising it.  Personally I believe it is a fantastic method to employ not only for user awareness, but in other parts of the corporate world as well.

We used gamification to deliver our document retention awareness training last year.  It was deemed considerably more engaging than the course content of previous years.  However, the addition of an online collaborative/competitive component would probably increase user interest and awareness substantially.
