Does your organization adopt a PM methodology? Do you think it helps or it just means more work for the staff ? Do you think the additional effort is worth it?

RE: Does a PM Methodology help?

I'm sure that a PM Methodologie or Framework is usefull for organization. People working on PM share the processes, the tools, the practices and the same understanding of what the organization expects its PM staff to achieve. A common framework will help to measure the PM performance and to assess the PM Maturity. It can also help the organization to benchmark its practices against the best of the bread! My 2cts. Mamane

RE: Does a PM Methodology help?

It does help. But each project of reasonable size are different. So following the same methodology of PM may not be possible for all. Little handcrafting here and there of existing methodology in order to make it most effective does help. Thanks Santanu

RE: Does a PM Methodology help?

Yes, one size doesn't fit all. I agree that a methodology must be customized to the organization / project. I think having a common set of terminology also helps in communication, which is crucial for effective team work. Proper documentation also enables continuous improvement cos project teams can learn from previous teams' experiences. However, like the adoption of any methodology or best practice, it's difficult to get people's buy in and get them realize the benefits it may bring.

RE: Does a PM Methodology help?

Maybe it's not one only PM Methodology, but distinct PM Methodologies for specific project sets. For ex., agile methods are maybe not prior building a skyscraper.

RE: Does a PM Methodology help?

So, Steffen, what kind of projects do you think are suitable for using Agile? In Hong Kong, we don't use it that much as far as I know. I guess the reasons are 1) Our turnover rate is comparatively high. People with 2-7 years of experience like to switch jobs. 2) Most technical people will gradually move on to be project managers or systems analysts and they will no longer need to take care of the coding work.

RE: Does a PM Methodology help?

I believe it does help but the fact that it has to be adjusted for the different projects based on their peculiarity does not make it feasible most times
