During my eight years as a volunteer on ISACA’s Board of Directors (and over 30 years as an active member), I have gained a deep appreciation for how sustained service can help both advance a global organization and enrich one’s own professional journey. ISACA’s evolution—from its origins as a community focused on technology risk and EDP audit, to a multi-faceted organization at the heart of governance, security, risk, and IT audit—has been nothing short of impressive. Serving as an ISACA volunteer for decades and an ISACA Board Director until my term expired this year confirmed for me the critical importance of staying involved, not just for professional and personal growth, but for the continued advancement of our professional community.
A defining portion of my time with ISACA was my tenure as Board chair. At that pivotal moment in the organization’s history, we started three key transformational initiatives: transforming the executive team, transforming the board, and transforming our chapters.
First, we set out to transform the executive team—focusing on leadership alignment, building a culture ready for change, and positioning ISACA for a dynamic future. We created a culture of collaboration and innovation, setting the stage for bold decision-making and growth opportunities across the organization. This transformation helped ensure ISACA remains nimble and responsive to the rapidly evolving needs of our membership and the industries we serve.
Second, we launched a concerted effort to transform the Board itself. Recognizing the importance of forward-thinking governance, we endeavored to strengthen board operations, embrace diversity, and encourage strategic vision. This included re-evaluating Board roles and necessary capabilities, supporting professional development for directors, and emphasizing the need for continuity, while seeking fresh ideas. These efforts positioned the Board to more effectively guide ISACA into its next half-century of service and innovation.
Lastly, we focused on transforming our chapters—one of ISACA’s greatest assets and the lifeblood of our global community. By investing in chapter development, expanding leadership opportunities, and encouraging greater local engagement and advocacy, we empowered volunteers at every level to drive change and foster stronger, more connected chapters. Well-prepared and adaptive chapters are vital for delivering direct value to our members, keeping ISACA’s global network vibrant and relevant, and rallying volunteers.
Throughout these initiatives, I was reminded of just how impactful sustained volunteer service can be. The chapters may be our lifeblood, but volunteers are the heart of our global community. No matter what stage we are in our careers, there is always an opportunity to find value in the ISACA community and to support our colleagues through volunteering. Our passions and efforts as volunteers are reflected in the very culture of ISACA—a culture built on giving back and ensuring a strong legacy for future generations. The willingness of seasoned professionals to remain active, mentor new leaders, contribute to the profession and advocate for change is what propels both ISACA and the broader profession forward, making it the global leader in our respective disciplines.
Personally, my volunteer journey with ISACA parallels my growth as an IT audit and security professional. From local chapter leadership to global Board contributions, I have found that ISACA offers myriad avenues for making an impact, nurturing talent, and fostering professional development. The relationships, certifications, and leadership skills I gained along the way are invaluable, but the greatest reward remains seeing the organization thrive and be prepared for the upcoming challenges.
Staying involved is essential—not only because technology and its risks are rapidly changing, but because the strength of our network and the quality of our shared learning depends on ongoing engagement. Whether mentoring, participating in chapter events, or driving strategic initiatives, volunteers infuse ISACA with knowledge, passion, and continuity.
My time on ISACA’s Board of Directors has been among the most fulfilling experiences of my career. The work we do—in audit, governance, risk, and security—is central to the organizations we serve and to society at large. For those who aspire to shape their profession and leave a meaningful legacy, there is no substitute for active involvement. Through continued engagement and courageous transformation, we ensure ISACA’s best days are always ahead of us, and that our global community remains strong, adaptive, and united in its purpose.
While my time on the Global Board has concluded, I am still pursuing that next opportunity to continue to globally serve ISACA and our incredible profession. As a start, I will be assisting Board Chair John De Santis with identifying candidates for the Chair’s Fellowship Program.
There are countless ways to participate in the ISACA community, whether that is through exploring leadership or through more contained volunteer opportunities that fit your interests. It doesn’t matter what path you choose: find something that ignites your passion and allows you to make your mark. Stay involved… ISACA, and the profession, needs you!
