Claude Mythos, Anthropic’s newest language model, has captured attention across the cybersecurity industry. Professionals are now faced with the challenge of how to address agentic artificial intelligence (AI) that can identify and link security flaws in a chain of exploitation that previously only a few elite specialists could accomplish.1 This marks the beginning of a new era in agentic AI-driven threats, where the speed needed to exploit new vulnerabilities has been reduced from days or weeks to mere hours.
Several important changes have taken place for the adversary and the defender in recent years. At the same time, the underlying categories of vulnerabilities and the importance of sound architecture and hygiene have not disappeared. Well-established security fundamentals—defense-in-depth, resilient design, configuration management, and rigorous change control—remain of importance even as discovery accelerates. As AI innovation continues to shape the cyberlandscape, a key question emerges: how has responsibility been shared so far, and what should be done next to address the future of AI vulnerabilities?
What Has Changed for the Adversary?
The recent launch of models tuned to surface software security flaws has prompted urgent discussion across security organizations. This development signals a durable shift in the vulnerability landscape: discovery and exploit chaining can now occur at machine speed and with far lower scaffolding than before. Agentic AI changes the tempo and accessibility of vulnerability discovery. Internal analyses and expert commentary indicate that time-to-exploit (TTE) has collapsed from weeks or months into hours or days in some workflows, and that chaining exploits programmatically is now practical.2 Models can lower technical barriers and enable motivated actors with modest resources to perform multistep exploitation that historically required elite specialists. A similar adjustment in adversary tactics can be seen with the rise of attacks as a service. Attacks can be purchased and executed, or a threat actor can be commissioned to run the attack, requiring little technical aptitude or understanding from the purchaser. Today, this can be accomplished on a machine without paying for an actor, at scale and expeditiously.
What Has Changed for Defenders?
Defenders (i.e., security professionals) are impacted in two major ways: first, defenders must incorporate AI capabilities into everyday workflows for vulnerability discovery, prioritization, patch-impact analysis, and automated testing so that AI agents can materially accelerate manual tasks. The use of AI response agents that scope findings, validate exploitability, and generate remediation suggestions are already being evaluated by organizations in the wild. Second, human roles must evolve to address these functions, including governance, high-integrity validation of agentic response, architecture design adjustments and considerations, and exception handling. Human oversight remains essential to managing agent activities including errors, probabilistic outputs, and risk decisions. While humans in the loop are contentious3, particularly posing challenges to the speed of agentic solutions and the utility of the tool, periodic evaluation of models and agents is required to ensure proper function, security, and operation.
An organization’s vulnerability management practices must emphasize point-in-time scanning and ticketing into continuous exposure management. This involves correlating agent-derived findings with runtime topology, business criticality, and the appropriate change windows for safe remediation.
The creation and use of defensive vulnerability agents must also be considered. Established workflows for scoping, impact analysis, risk scoring, and automated patching are now provided out of the box for some agentic security tools. Accepting bounded autonomy must include defining acceptable error margins, escalation paths, accountability, risk tolerance decision statements, and documented human in the loop oversight as prerequisites prior to scaling the automation journey. Without the proper implementation of governance controls within this space, an organization’s automated defenses can create additional problems. These issues include false positives that waste time and disrupt critical business processes or lead to agent misinterpretations of legacy behavior, creating operational costs. The deployment of critical security controls is also essential, as recent studies have shown that 97% of organizations impacted by AI incidents cited a lack of proper access controls.4 AI agents require the same critical controls that are applied across the enterprise environment, based on risk and data sensitivity access accordingly.
At the same time, the underlying categories of vulnerabilities and the importance of sound architecture and hygiene have not disappeared. Well-established security fundamentals—defense-in-depth, resilient design, configuration management, and rigorous change control—remain of importance even as discovery accelerates.Vendor risk and third-party risk management (TPRM) will see increased urgency placed on assessments, and concerns from regulatory bodies on exposure and remediation timelines will create demands for greater visibility into vendor exposure to these exploits. A software bill of materials (SBOM) remains a valuable foundation; however, continuous evaluation, driven by agent-derived assessment of tools, is necessary in many regards. Proper configuration and the implementation of best practices tailored to an organization’s specific threat scenario remain the most effective ways to counter this attack velocity. Leveraging AI to secure AI offers a relevant countermeasure to a Mythos-like threat, particularly when reinforced by microsegmentation, continuous threat hunting and detection, and robust prioritization of identity protection for nonhuman entities that may be vulnerable. Critical infrastructure providers and those operating legacy OT environments should prioritize projects to segment their networks, build rapid redeploy capabilities, and tightly govern testing within the continuous integration/continuous delivery (CI/CD) pipeline to alleviate patch safety concerns for these technologies.
The next steps for defenders should be focused on reorienting the vulnerability program towards exposure management, managing risk to align with organizational risk statements, and making calculated decisions supported by vulnerability data collected in assessments. Leverage AI vulnerability management capabilities where appropriate and practical. Reprioritize security projects with the organization’s IT counterparts and advocate for architectural changes that reduce blast radius, increase network segmentation, and reduce manual patching activities. Last, it is crucial to brief boards on this issue, presenting response plans using terminology that resonates with members and articulates both reporting cadence and residual risk. Special attention should be paid to gains made in discovery and response efforts coupled with strong governance implementation across the organization’s AI footprint.
A Shared Responsibility Approach
The widening capability gap between adversaries and defenders further highlights the susceptibility of small and medium organizations that lack the resources needed to employ these advanced AI security tools to defend their environments. Reliance on managed service providers, cloud service providers, and community-shared defenses can assist in baseline resiliency to updated threat tactics without creating infeasible budgetary needs.
Major AI developers have also stated their willingness to assist by adopting a cautious rollout approach, sharing new cyber-focused models with trusted partners while limiting general release. To this end, OpenAI said it would initially share a model called GPT-5.4-Cyber with hundreds of organizations and expand access in stages and reported plans to reduce certain guardrails for verified cybersecurity professionals while verifying user identities.5 Moreover, Anthropic opted to provide early access to a narrow consortium of technology organizations that maintain critical infrastructure, citing the need to allow those organizations to harden systems before broader release.6
The Cloud Security Alliance’s (CSA) CISO community provided an expedited strategy briefing on Mythos and focused on summarizing the current situation from a technical perspective. It provides helpful guidance on what CISOs can do in their organizations to mitigate this agentic-enabled attack vector along with how to prepare for future waves of AI threats. Several key steps include:
- Utilize large language model (LLM)-based vulnerability discovery and remediation capabilities due to the maturity of LLMs in this space.
- Update enterprise risk metrics and communicate with stakeholders. Include what they need to know about the organization’s plan to address these updates.
- Increase employee focus on the basics, such as multifactor authentication (MFA), robust access controls, and network segmentation, as they remain valid remediation activities.
- Prepare employees through simulation exercises and update enterprise playbooks to account for incidents related to mythos-style exploits.
The briefing provides much more guidance for organizations, which are shared publicly on the CSA website.7
Conclusion
The development of Claude Mythos does not represent a single-product concern, but rather a rapidly maturing capability in agentic AI. Adequate response requires implementing practical changes to vulnerability management programs to maintain attacker velocity, favoring continuous processes over static ones, and maintaining human-centered oversight functions within organizational AI tools. Existing governance frameworks and programs should add AI as a subcomponent but remain overarching and practical. With the release of Mythos, there will be a catch-up period where organizations will rush to secure sensitive ecosystems. If researchers and vendors have the time to develop effective countermeasures and controls, there may not be much of an impact from this particular attack vector on larger organizations. Conversely, for small and medium-sized businesses, Mythos and the future of AI-enabled threats may represent a more pressing concern and impact these organizations more significantly, making preparedness, clarity, and decisive action more critical than ever.
